Urban landscapes are not just for beautifying the city, not just to fulfill sustainable development principles, and not just to help combat climate change. More importantly given the latest widespread concern of COVID-19, urban landscapes need to confront issues to do with human health. The HKILA has the rare opportunity to partner with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Division of Social Science professor Stuart Gietel-Basten to investigate garden design with a focus on human health. We held a conference in November 2018 where nine experts in the field talked about garden therapy and how traditional Japanese gardens contribute to psychological and physiological human wellbeing. We visited Kyoto in September 2019 and visited ten gardens, temples and sites that are beautiful and spiritually uplifting. Please find the link of the report which is funded under the Professional Services Advancement Support Scheme, of the project titled “Development capacity and international co-operation in therapeutic landscape architecture for ageing population”.
