Sharing Session on “Study on Street Ecology Strategy for Hong Kong – Phase 2”
1. Briefing Session for “Guidelines on Soil Improvement” and
2. Underground Growing Space for Urban Trees
The Greening, Landscape and Tree Management Section (GLTMS) of the Development Bureau commissioned the “Street Ecology Strategy for Hong Kong – Phase 2” to study the urban trees growing environment in our compact city. One of the key recommendations is the “Guidelines on Soil Improvement” (the Guidelines), which was recently issued on 17 October 2022 (The guidelines can be downloaded from the Greening Website at https://www.greening.gov.hk).
The Guidelines aim to provide a handy reference to guide parties responsible for vegetation management and maintenance to carry out routine soil management and soil amendments in a systematic and timely manner, to promote a better understanding of the key soil parameters affecting plant growth, as well as to raise awareness of practitioners on the importance of routine soil management. The study also reviewed measures adopted in other metropolises to improve underground growing space of urban trees. The second part of the sharing session will present the finding of the study on this aspect.
