Synopsis
A public space can be broadly defined as a place of public use, accessible and enjoyable by everyone, regardless of his or her background, without pre-requisites such as a fee and/or profit motive. Quality public space is vital to the well beings of our everyday life, fostering a sense of belonging and identity as well as connecting us to nature in urban environment. Public space has many spatial forms, including parks, plaza, waterfront promenade, streets, sidewalks, market places etc.
Whilst enjoyment and recreation in public space are still the emphasis of many open space development projects, the understanding of public space in urban studies has undergone significant development intertwined with social, economic, cultural and environmental perspectives and requires multi-disciplinary dissections in order to unfold its facets of values. Architects, landscape architects, planners and surveyors have also consciously aware of the importance of bottom-up design, based on the principles of inclusion, collaboration and empowerment of stakeholders in decision making, and their roles as facilitators to engage the community in design process.
In this seminar, we have invited scholars and young practitioners from different disciplines to share their visions and discuss the role of professionals on public space.
