After 3 years of on-going efforts, the Association of Landscape Consultants (ALC) in collaboration with the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects completed the project “Resilient City – Landscape Planning Towards Climate Adaptation and Asian Townscape Award 2019”. Under the project we successfully hosted in Hong Kong the 10th anniversary of the international event Asian Townscape Awards (ATA) and the ATA 2019 Award Ceremony as partner of UN-HABITAT (Regional Office for Asia and Pacific), Fukuoka Asian urban Research Centre (URC), Asian Habitat Society (AHS), and Asian Townscape Design Society (ATDeS). ATA has over the years awarded projects from close to 100 in Asia.
As the host ALC has taken “climate adaptation” as the main theme and alongside with the international events ALC organized a conference allowing exchange between landscape architects and experts in areas such as marine ecology, life science, and social science. The conference focused on adoption of nature-based climate adaptation strategy for future city development for Hong Kong and surrounding regions, coastal cities where the natural system, communities, and businesses are subject to natural disasters’ risks.
It is particularly meaningful that the final booklet of the project is printed and published on the World Environment Day. It will be distributed to our international and local partners, as well as the authorities/ policy makers of Hong Kong.
Landscape architects across the globe are at the forefront in tacking climate change. With the sea-level rise and global biodiversity loss, completion of this project is but only one of the many potentials of joint effort in our contribution to city developments addressing global environmental issues.
Details of the events and softcopy of the booklet can be downloaded here.
